Summer Sessions

Our SUMMER PROGRAM is held during the months of July and August.  There are usually four, week-long sessions both in July and in August. The summer program is a wonderful opportunity for your child to continue to enhance the social, emotional, physical and intellectual skills that are already in motion from the regular school year.  We look forward to working with your child during the summer.  You will have nearly the entire month of June as well as three weeks at the end of the summer to take day trips and family vacations.  Please review the enclosed information, and call us in the spring if you are interested!

Applications are accepted on a first-come / first-served basis, and in order of length of time registered:
The order of preference for the enrollments will be :
 1.  The full summer extended day program.
 2.  The full summer 3-hour program.
 2.  The full month [3 sessions] extended day program.
 3.  The full month [3 sessions] 3-hour program.
 4.  Three weeks extended day program, ....and so on.

The summer program primarily focuses on outdoor activities, the arts, conservation, camping and safety, and a few field trips that are relevant to our curriculum. We also give consideration to enrollments for Alumni from previous years and also to children who are enrolled in Derry Montessori for the upcoming academic year.  Sheila Perry, our Kindergarten teacher, has been our Program Coordinator for the past two years.  We will continue our Camp Counselor Program if there is an interested young person who would like to participate; please contact Donna.  We usually offer swim lessons by a Water Safety Instructor during a July Session.  Some water safety devices may be required of some of the smaller children.  The swim lessons will include small group presentations (2-3) for the younger children with two instructors in the water at all times.  The older children, have slightly larger groups i.e.: 4-5 and two instructors with some relays and other group type exercises.

*SAFETY IS AN ABSOLUTE PRIORITY IN ANY OF OUR GROUP LESSONS.*

Our special theme programs have been a great hit!  Everyone has enjoyed the week-long sessions and this year we are planning several weeks with special themes; past years have included themes such as animals, the circus, a celebration of winter in July, in addition to swimming, arts & crafts, and sports.  More specific details will be available as we firm up our enrollments.

There will be limited enrollment and all applications will be numbered as they come in.  Registrations are customarily due on or before March 1st so that we can plan our curriculum, our staffing, and make reservations for field trips.

The summer program is held with the intention of deepening appreciation in our children for natural wildlife, respect and caring for the environment and learning safety.

We look forward to a fabulous summer with you and would most appreciate any NEW ideas you might have for us.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU!

We have a very exciting program planned for this summer. Our summer sessions carry with
them an environmental focus that will help your child develop the skills needed in managing,
appreciating and developing a sense of stewardship for the natural world around him/her.
These components are brought to the children through arts, science, music, literature, sports
and field trips. All of these subjects will be explored in multi-sensory ways. Our program is
open to presently enrolled students, fall 2010 students as well as alumni. We can take
students up to 12 years of age. We have a counselor in Training Program. If you know of a
young adult who enjoys working with kids, please share our information with them and have
them call the school.

All summer program classes will be held at the Derry Montessori School facility. Our teachers
this summer are Ms Jen Smith and Ms Jessica Lamb. We look forward to a fabulous SUMMER
2010 with you and your child! Activities throughout the summer include:

 hands-on exploration,
 cooperative learning,
 material development using inductive and deductive reasoning,
 mentoring with mixed age groupings,
 lots of physical activity and cooperative learning in a non-competitive atmosphere,
 Classroom time with computers and Montessori Materials.
 Leave no child inside “Children in Nature” Science through nature curriculum
 Arts, Theater, Music, Cooking and much more….

Focus is on outdoor activities, the arts, nature, conservation, and field trips that are relevant to
curriculum. Our Field Trips this summer will include visits to places that support our Unit
Studies. Field trips will be contingent on available drivers. We have daily activities that include
arts & crafts, stories related to the week’s theme, and games. We make maximum use of the
outdoor classroom, enjoying gardening, woodworking, sculpture and many other art mediums.
